Our parents have sayings that continue to resonate with us daily for different reasons. Our dad would always say, “You can do anything you want; it all comes down to how hard you’re willing to work.” And our mother always says, Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to; just stay the course and keep doing what you’re doing.” They both, and our mother more than ever, have always been the ultimate sounding board and the most positive influences on our lives, both personally and professionally.
Gloria Larson
Boston Private Board of Directors, Former President of Bentley University, President in Residence at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Massachusetts Conference for Women Board President
The single best piece of advice I’ve ever received came from Allen Larson, my husband of 35 years. Early in our marriage and throughout, he’s urged me to take career risks, some of which were calculated ones and others much bolder. Allen refers to his theory of careers (and life) as “ jumping into the deep end of the pool and not holding onto the side.” Each time that I expressed self-doubt that I was ready to accept a promotion, take on a different functional role, or consider an entirely new career path, he reminded me that I had taken prior risks that worked out well, had transferable knowledge and skills, and could tread water while learning what was required in the new post. This advice, along with Allen’s unwavering support, has emboldened me over the past four decades to undertake a decidedly non-linear professional journey through law, public policy and business, ultimately leading to what was my most personally rewarding role as President of Bentley University.

To love yourself right now, just as you are. This advice is especially relevant to me right now with our new reality, as we need to remember to take care of ourselves first in order to give our best to others.

I am grateful to have benefited from the experience and wisdom of both male and female mentors, many of whom have also been advocates. As I continue to navigate the balance between my career and motherhood, I am constantly learning and seeking advice from working mothers. A close friend from childhood reminds me to be proactive, and raise my hand for opportunities outside of my comfort zone, as doing so will create a vehicle to differentiate myself. I strive every day to put my intention, and energy, into action.
