Our dad would always say, “You can do anything you want; it all comes down to how hard you’re willing to work.” And our mother always says, Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to; just stay the course and keep doing what you’re doing.” They both, and our mother more than ever, have always been the ultimate sounding board and the most positive influences on our lives, both personally and professionally.

The single best piece of advice I’ve ever received came from Allen Larson, my husband of 35 years. Early in our marriage and throughout, he’s urged me to take career risks, some of which were calculated ones and others much bolder. Allen refers to his theory of careers (and life) as “ jumping into the deep end of the pool and not holding onto the side.” Each time that I expressed self-doubt that I was ready to accept a promotion, take on a different functional role, or consider an entirely new career path, he reminded me that I had taken prior risks that worked out well, had transferable knowledge and skills, and could tread water while learning what was required in the new post. This advice, along with Allen’s unwavering support, has emboldened me over the past four decades to undertake a decidedly non-linear professional journey through law, public policy and business, ultimately leading to what was my most personally rewarding role as President of Bentley University.
