What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
Listen more than you speak. It’s only by listening that one can truly learn. This piece of advice has helped me tremendously in all aspects of my life: school, career, relationships and, most importantly, working with clients. Listening allows an advisor to understand how to help each client to best achieve his/her goals. Oftentimes advisors are tempted to speak too quickly, because they want to do what they do best, “advise.” However, the best advice is formulated only after an advisor has truly listened to the client.
The pandemic impacted us all tremendously. What stood out to you during the crisis?
What stood out to me is the importance of social connections. Pre-pandemic it was easy to take for granted relationships with relatives, friends and colleagues. For many people the height of the pandemic was a very lonely time. The pandemic made me realize how important social connections are to a person’s well-being and the inte- gral role people play in each other’s lives.
How has the way you’ve supported and engaged with clients evolved?
My goal from the beginning of a client relationship is to become a “trusted advisor.” It takes time and hard work to earn a client’s respect and trust. I strive to listen to their needs and be as responsive as possible in order to help each client achieve his/her goals so that as time goes on, I can play an increasingly important role in their lives. It is truly rewarding for me to know that my clients trust my advice and act on it. This for me is the true measure of a successful client/ advisor relationship.
What makes you optimistic for the future?
My children. Watching them learn, grow and develop into good family members, friends and ultimately members of society gives me hope for a better tomorrow. It allows me to dream of a future with more good than bad.
